Microsoft has fixed a known issue that caused problems with Remote Desktop and RDS connections after installing Windows updates released since January 2025.
As the company explained when it acknowledged the issues on Monday, affected users experience RDP disconnections after 65 seconds when establishing UDP connections from Windows 11 24H2 to RDS hosts on systems running Windows Server 2016 earlier.
While Windows Server 2025 devices aren’t directly impacted as RDS hosts, they may still trigger sudden Remote Desktop disconnects when acting as RDP clients connecting to older servers.
“After installing the January 2025 Windows preview update (KB5050094) and later updates, users might experience unexpected disconnections with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions, including Remote Desktop Services (RDS),” the company said in a Monday entry to the Windows release health dashboard.
“We’ve observed a significant increase in reports of this issue following the release of the March 2025 Windows security update (KB5053598).”
Today, Microsoft said the known issue will be fixed for Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 users after installing the KB5053656 preview update released on Thursday.
“We recommend you install the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one,” it said.
The fix will be generally available with next month’s cumulative updates. Until then, IT admins can also deploy it on enterprise-managed devices using a Known Issue Rollback group policy.
Issues still waiting for a fix
Earlier this week, Redmond warned of another known issue triggering Remote Desktop freezes on Windows Server 2025 after installing security updates released since the February 2025 Patch Tuesday.
This issue also affected Windows 11 24H2 systems, but Microsoft resolved it roughly with the KB5052093 optional update released on February 25. The company says the fix will roll out to affected Windows Server 2025 devices with a future Windows update.
Veeam also revealed on Tuesday that Microsoft is helping investigate an issue leading to connection errors on Windows 11 24H2 systems when attempting to restore data from Backup & Replication servers or SMB network shares.
On Wednesday, Microsoft fixed another Windows bug causing USB printers to start printing random text after installing updates released since late January 2025.
